Students to give Trump advice during Mikva citywide speech competition

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago students who have been following the presidential election will voice their advice and suggestions for President-elect Donald Trump during Saturday's Mikva Challenge Soapbox Competition.

About 200 students will participate in the citywide speech competition, which will be held at Jones College Prep High School.

They aren't old enough to vote, but hope Trump will be listening. After a divisive election, the students are focusing on suggestions for what they think Trump should prioritize in his first 100 days.

They plan to address a range of their concerns like immigration, women's rights and violence.

"I have grown up in a society where people who shouldn't have guns have guns," one student's speech states. Another says, "Some young kids are bullied every day and get no help."

A few of the students from Benito Juarez High School will compete. One Wednesday, they practiced their speeches. The students said their parents don't want them participating in protests, but Saturday gives them a chance to have their voices heard.

"This is our only way to voice what's happening in a peaceful way and try to get him to take into consideration our thoughts," said student Netasha Lopez.

"Project soapbox is providing young people to talk about what they care about and not let someone else tell you what they should care about," said Karla Castilla, of Mikva Challenge.

At the same time, students in Aurora will also have a speech competition.

Mikva Challenge will be tweeting quotes from the students to the president-elect.
