Freight train strikes vehicle in Mount Prospect; UP-NW trains delayed, Metra says

MOUNT PROSPECT, Ill. (WLS) -- An 82-year-old man was extricated from his vehicle Tuesday afternoon after it was struck by a freight train in Mount Prospect.

The Mount Prospect man was hospitalized but did not appeared injured. However, the man's Honda sustained heavy damage, police said. He was issued one citation for disobeying a railroad crossing signal.

The incident occurred at about 2:15 p.m. at the Union Pacific railroad crossing with Main Street (Route 83) near Prospect Avenue.

The Honda was struck by a train consisting of two engines and one car, traveling northwest bound on the south track of the crossing, police said.

The curb lane of southbound Main Street (Route 83) was closed during the crash investigation for approximately two hours.
