2 years later, Calumet City woman gunned down in front of her home remembered

CALUMET CITY, Ill. (WLS) -- Saturday marked two years since a Calumet City woman was gunned down in her own front yard.

The killer is still at-large, but Samantha Springer's family spent Saturday trying to keep her memory alive and seeking to ensure her case doesn't go cold.

Springer was a 21-year-old college student with dreams of becoming a therapist when she was fatally shot on her parent's front lawn.

"I miss her so much. She was my best friend," said her mother, Shari Springer.

About 100 people came out Saturday morning for a 5K walk in Midlothian. They chanted "Justice for Sammie" as they walked.

A portion of the proceeds from the event will go towards a scholarship at South Suburban College, where Samantha Springer was a student. The rest of the money will be used for the reward to find the person responsible for her death.

"I think it's important to come out and support a family hurting every day," said Tabbitha Blair.

Parents Tom and Shari Springer were both at their home on Pulaski Road in south suburban Calumet City the night of Sept. 16, 2015. Their daughter parked her car out front and was walking in when gunfire erupted, police said.

She was shot three times at point blank range.

"Hopefully she didn't suffer," Tom Springer said.

The family and their community continue to look for answers two years later.

"We call the police, my son is texting, we have billboards donated," Shari Springer said.

The Calumet City Police Department said Saturday that there are no new updates to the investigation.
