Chicago Riverwalk kicks off summer on Saturday

CHICAGO (WLS) -- On Saturday, the summer season begins for the Chicago Riverwalk, which now features over a mile of entertainment, art and restaurants.

Walking tours and live music, among other activities, are planned from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The Riverwalk stretches along the Chicago River from Lake Shore Drive to Lake Street.

"Some highlights of things you are going to see, we are going to have fishing at the jetty, you can come and bring your kids and learn how to fish with the Chicago Park District. We are going to be having antique boat fair display," said Ann Hickey, of the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events.

On Saturday, 11 vendors will be set up along the Riverwalk.

Tiny Tapp is back for another season -- and expanding with a new café that will open this weekend.

"Last year we were here and it's incredible. Everyone comes down for happy hour. It's just the happiest place in Chicago and this year we are back for more," said Isabelle Langheim, the Tiny Cafe manager.

City officials said they hope the expanded Riverwalk not only attracts tourists, but also locals, like Kimberly Densmore who was already enjoying the Riverwalk on Wednesday.

"This is my second time. I have been living in Chicago for 15 years and I just recently discovered the Riverwalk so I'm taking advantage of it today," Densmore said.

The new construction from State Street to Lake Street takes advantage of the big beautiful bridges, giving the feeling of different types of room, a city official said.

"So every time you come under a bridge, there is a different thing to experience," said Michelle Woods, Department of Fleet & Facility Management.

The Chicago Riverwalk season ends in October.
