Chicago Police stakeout Dunkin' Donuts

CHICAGO, Ill. (WLS) -- A police stakeout takes focus and this morning, something extra: Chicagoans' generosity! CPD officers camped out on Dunkin' Donuts rooftops citywide to raise money for Special Olympics Illinois. Law enforcement officers across the state joined CPD in the annual "Cop on a Rooftop."

Donations earned people a free donut. T-shirts and coffee mugs were also available in exchange for larger donations.

Sergeant Juan Clas and CPD 12th District officers began their stakeout on the city's Near West Side at 5 a.m. and even got some help from Benny the Bull!

"We get to interact with the community... you get to interact with a lot of kids, lot of people coming, going to work. They get to see us in a different light," Clas said.

Special Olympics Illinois President and CEO Dave Breen appreciates the work done by law enforcement for his organization. He sees this fundraiser as a great way to connect police with Special Olympics athletes and also get the word out about his organization, which hosts events year-round.

"One in four of us are impacted in some way with a person with a disability that's either related to us in our family, etc. So I think it's just shrinking that world a little bit to come out and support what the athletes are doing and how they impact the communities," Breen explained.

The state summer games are in Bloomington, Illinois, and Normal, Illinois, from June ninth to 11th.
