Police: Retired officer fatally shoots would-be carjacker in Bridgeport
Chicago police said a retired officer shot at three men who were attempting to carjack him, killing one of them.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago police said a retired officer shot at three men who were attempting to carjack him, killing one of them.

Police said the officer, who neighbors said is in his 60's, was either inside his vehicle or near it in the 2900-block of South Shields Avenue shortly before 7:30 when three men approached him and tried to carjack him. The retired officer opened fire and struck one of the offenders, police said.

"The retired Chicago Police officer was able to fire shots, striking the offender in the upper body. The offender was taken to Mercy Hospital where he's in critical condition. The other two offenders were apprehended, and area south detectives are handling the investigation," Sgt. Rocco Alioto said shortly after the shooting.

That suspect was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, where he later died.

The two other men fled but were soon captured, and are currently in police custody. Police said a handgun was recovered from the scene.

The officer retired from Area Central eight years ago, so Area South will handle the investigation, police said. The retired officer and the two suspects in custody were both taken to Area South for questioning.

Because the officer is retired, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability will not be investigating.
