GLENWOOD, Ill. (WLS) -- A toddler is recovering after he allegedly found a loaded handgun and shot himself in south suburban Glenwood.

Police responded to a home in the 100 block of Young Street Saturday at about noon, after someone flagged down an officer on patrol.

Police said it appears that the shooting was accidental.

"At some point, the child had access to an unsecured weapon and shot himself in the hand," said Chief Derek Peddycord. "He was transported to an area hospital for treatment."

Police said an investigation into the shooting is ongoing. It'll determine whether the parents face any charges.

The family is cooperating with police, Peddycord said.
