PARK RIDGE, Ill. (WLS) -- A loud car crash caused a busy intersection to be shut down for hours overnight in northwest suburban Park Ridge.

Witnesses say racing drivers may have caused it. Police say the investigation into what led to this crash may take hours.

Two vehicles were involved in the crash around 11 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Cumberland and Devon.

Eyewitnesses tell us a red SUV was apparently racing another car, the driver then slammed into a different car.

The SUV slammed then Into a tree.

"We were down in the basement. We heard a bigger accident than we normally hear out here. We came out, there was a young lady laying out here on the road. There was another gentleman on the other side of the tree here who was also down, but he wasn't moving much, but he was moving," said one witness.

A red Chevy SUV driven by a 20-year-old man and a gray Audi were involved in the crash. Police say the Chevy ran a red light and hit the Audi. The Chevy driver and his 18-year-old female passenger suffered the most serious injuries. The father of the 18-year-old woman says she was ejected from the vehicle.

The two people in the Audi suffered minor injuries.
