CHICAGO (WLS) -- Crews started building new protected bike lanes on Chicago's North Side on Monday.

The bike lanes will run along Clybourn Avenue between North Avenue and Division Street and on Division Street between Clybourn Avenue and Orleans Street. It's the first state route to get expanded bike lanes.

A raised concrete median will provide a buffer between cyclists and drivers.

The Illinois Department of Transportation warned drivers to be prepared for on-and-off lane closures during construction.

The project is scheduled to be finished in August.
