Elgin police officer James Wilson dies after freak accident

ELGIN, Ill. (WLS) -- A freak accident claimed the life of an Elgin police officer.

Officer James Wilson struck a deer while riding his personal motorcycle Tuesday night. He was off duty at the time. Wilson later died of heart failure.

Wilson, 51, was a 27-year veteran of the Elgin Police Department and had won several awards for his service.

Wilson's funeral is Saturday in Evanston.
