City Colleges of Chicago considers flat rate tuition system

CHICAGO (WLS) -- City Colleges of Chicago is considering changing its tuition structure to a flat rate system for both full and part-time students, officials said.

City Colleges of Chicago's Board of Trustees will meet Thursday to consider to the change, which officials say will eliminate all fees and make education costs more predictable for students.

"The new flat-price tuition structure is designed to encourage full-time status and faster completion for students, while also making City Colleges' prices more transparent by eliminating 151 fees currently in place," said City Colleges of Chicago Chancellor Cheryl Hyman in a statement. "Under the new price structure, City Colleges' tuition per semester will remain far cheaper for a Chicago resident than attending any other Chicago-area community college."

The school's current tuition system is based per credit hour. The new system would help remove financial challenges for students wanting to enroll in programs that currently have higher fees than other courses, officials said.
