LAKE COUNTY, Ill. (WLS) -- Texting 911 is now an option in Lake County, Ill., for residents in the towns of Antioch, Barrington, Hainesville and the four Round Lake area communities. Officials say texting may be a better option than calling 911 in a hostage or domestic violence situation.

Police say it's also good for teenagers, who may feel more comfortable texting if they're in trouble. However, it's still advised to call 911 as the first method of communication.
