CHICAGO (WLS) -- Police are investigating after a 10-year-old was hospitalized following a shooting by an 8-year-old relative in the Brainerd neighborhood on Chicago's South Side.
Chicago police said the two boys were playing with a gun in a home in 9000-block of S. Bishop when it went off, striking the 10-year-old in the ribs. Police have not said how the children obtained the gun.
"It's just a tragic accident," said Dorian Spratley, a neighbor. "Great people. Very family-oriented. Very caring. You can see out in their yard, they have basketball, footballs and stuff. That's just what they were, the kids come out and play."
The boy is in guarded condition now at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. He underwent surgery Thursday afternoon.
"You know, your heart drops because you know the people, you're very close with them. So, your prayers go out to them," Spratley said.
Spratley said the neighborhood is family friendly. Many parents grew up on this block and are now raising their children here.
"It's a very family-oriented block. You know, I've been here all my life, 40 years old, so grew up with the neighbors. We're just very family-oriented," Spratley said.
Police have not said who the gun belongs to and whether the gun owner will face charges.
