Addison police officer delivers baby

ADDISON, Ill. (WLS) -- A police officer in west suburban Addison delivered a baby Tuesday morning.

Officer Maria Reyes responded to a home in the 600-block of Meadows Boulevard and found a woman in active labor.

"I was trying to take the pain as much as I can, and then we was on our way to the hospital, the pain started coming back to back," said mom Sondra Johnson.

And just like that - with the family in the car waiting to head to the hospital - baby Malachi decided he wasn't waiting.

"I couldn't make it out," Johnson said.

Panicked, grandma called 911.

"She was very frantic and said the baby was coming out, and it was out," said 911 Dispatcher Tiffany Williamson, who took the call.

"I was about a block away. As soon as I opened the door I saw mom sitting low by the door," Officer Reyes said.

Within seconds, Malachi made his entrance.

"I held the baby and he was white, he was still pretty new," Reyes said.

Reyes used a latex glove to tie off the umbilical cord. At that time the color of the baby began to improve and the baby began to cry.

Addison Fire Protection District paramedics arrived shortly after.

Mom and baby were taken to a hospital and doing well. Johnson calls baby number six "a miracle."
