Several people appear to have witnessed the incident, including one man mowing his lawn.
"There were two boys and one boy. They ran for a while. Then one turned around and started shooting. I don't know where he went," the neighbor who wished to remain nameless said.
"I saw my neighbor's son come running around the corner. I heard the gunshots. I asked him if he was OK. He said he was OK. I calmed myself checking his body. Apparently I didn't do a good job because he got shot in the back. The lower part of his back," another neighbor who wished to remain nameless said.
The boy was rushed to Comer Children's Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition, police said.
The circumstances of the shooting were still under investigation and details have not been released.
