Police may have break in North Side bump-and-runs

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago police may have a break in a recent series of bump-and-run car thefts on the city's North Side.

At least seven drivers have been robbed in the River North and Lincoln Park neighborhoods in the last month. Investigators may now know more about the car they're looking for.

A group of thieves has been capitalizing on confusion. Police said the suspects lightly tap on the bumper of a vehicle they want to steal, causing the other driver to get out and look for a dent. Then the thieves jump behind the wheel and take off, along with the car they came in.

Around 10:45 p.m. on June 22, a man driving a $100,000 Porsche was targeted in the 300-block of West Hubbard Street in Chicago's River North neighborhood. Here a list of the other six incidents:

-1800-block of North Clybourn Avenue on Friday, June 9, 2017 at 2:00 p.m.
-1500-block of North Dayton Street on Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at 10:06 p.m.
-100-block of East La Salle Street on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at 9:00 p.m.
-1700-block of North Halsted Street on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at 10:30 p.m.

-800-block of West Blackhawk Street on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at 2:45 p.m.
-2300-block of North Halsted Street on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at 9:50 p.m.

"I think it's crazy all the crime happening in this neighborhood lately," said Lisa Lane, who lives in the area. "I'm not sure why."

As first reported by neighborhood crime blog CWBChicago, police are looking for a silver or gray Chrysler 300 with tinted windows. The suspect's vehicle's license plate begins with X92. Police have not confirmed the description.

Police advised drivers who get into a minor crash to pull over in a populated area, turn off their vehicle and take the keys out of the vehicle, to avoid becoming a victim of a bump-and-run.

Alderman Michele Smith of the 43rd Ward sent out a safety alert regarding the bump-and-runs, saying a group of four people in their late teens to twenties are behind the thefts.
