Police said the crash happened at Route 47 and McDonald Road in Campton Hills at about 4 p.m.
Police said preliminary investigation and witness accounts revealed that a 69-year-old woman was driving a Ford Escape westbound on McDonald Road and ran through a stop sign. That's when a semi, which was traveling northbound on Route 47, collided with her vehicle.
The loaded semi, which was about 70,000 pounds and transporting mulch, had the right of way, police said.
Ford Escape's driver, who suffered life-threatening injuries, had to be removed from her vehicle, police said. She was transported to St. Joseph Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
No one else was injured. Police asked anyone with information about the crash to contact them at 630-584-0330.
