Members of the state treasurer's office had fans enter their names on its website to see who had unclaimed money. The amount they found raged from $30 to more than $1,000.
The cash could be from paychecks never cashed, rebates lost in the mail or forgotten bank accounts. After three years, the money is turned over to the state. Up to $40 billion dollars remains unclaimed across the nation.

"We find that 1 in 4 people who check our website find they have something that belongs to them. The average amount is $1,000. The largest amount I've personally given back is $1 million dollars," Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs said.
