Child safe after car stolen in East Chatham, Chicago police say

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A car was stolen in East Chatham Friday on Chicago's South Side, according to CPD.

Chicago police responded to the 8000-block of South Ellis Avenue just around 5 p.m. for a report for a stolen Kia Forte. An unknown offender broke into the vehicle and drove away, police said.

Police initially said a child was inside the vehicle when it was stolen, but later said further investigation showed a child was not inside. According to the family, an 8-year-old boy was in the backseat at the time.

Police said the child is safe with relatives and the incident remains under investigation.

No one is in custody and area detectives are investigating.

Police have not provided any other information at this time.
