The fire broke out just after 11 a.m. at Laramie Avenue and Huron Street in the city's Austin neighborhood. Video of the scene showed a large emergency response.

Police said the child, rescued by firefighters, suffered burns to his arm and possible smoke inhalation. The victim was transported to Stroger Hospital in serious condition.
A 59-year-old woman and two other children were able to leave the building unharmed, police said.

The circumstances surrounding the fire are not yet known. The Chicago Fire Department and Area Four detectives are investigating.
