The shooting took place at about 8:16 a.m. near an Amoco gas station in the 2000-block of North Laramie Avenue, police said.
The officer was transported to a hospital for observation and released.
So far, investigators have shared few details about the attack, which may have been caught by security cameras there.
Workers in the area who did not wish to be identified said it's possible shots rang out as an unknown gunman opened fire on a man driving a car down the street.
Police officials will not confirm the specifics of their investigation, but sources close to the probe said an off-duty Chicago police officer became involved in the shooting while possibly trying to intervene in the attack.

The officer involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the shooting, the agency said.
