CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago police officers shot a person in the North Lawndale neighborhood Monday.

Officers were traveling in an unmarked squad car in the 2100 block of South St. Louis at about 11:35 a.m. when they saw a group of people near a double-parked and tried to stop them to investigate, police said.

A man with a gun fled the scene on foot, and officers followed him into a vacant lot, police said. One officer shot the man, striking him the upper body. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability confirmed they are investigating the police shooting.

Officials at nearby Crown Community Academy of Fine Arts said in a letter to parents that all children and staff were brought inside the school after administrators reported hearing shots fired in the area.

Crown's principal said additional safety precautions will be put in place for afternoon dismissal with support from Chicago police and CPS security.

The shooting prompted angry responses from relatives of the victim, and they questioned why the 25-year-old father was shot.

"They say he had a gun. But he showed that he didn't have a gun," said Ebony Chapman, the victim's sister. "So he started running... but he surrendered, and you shoot him."
