The shooting took place in the 600-block of West 69th Street at about 1 a.m.
The victim was riding in the rideshare vehicle when police said someone inside of a dark-colored sedan fired shots. The man was wounded several times and transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he later died.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified him as Dontius M. Wilson, 23, of Chicago. The victim lived in the same block where the shooting occurred.
The driver of the vehicle told ABC7 the shooting was a horrifying experience for him, and he's thankful to come out of it with just minor injuries.

He said the incident is an example of some of the dangers rideshare drivers face every day in Chicago.
The rideshare driver said he was suddenly blocked in by another vehicle.
His car is now riddled with bullets, with its windows shattered.
The driver said he's only been driving for Uber for a couple of weeks, and the terrifying ordeal has him rethinking that.
"That area has a lot of problems," he said. "I probably won't drive for Uber anymore"

An Uber spokesperson said in a statement, "Our hearts go out to the rider's family as they search for answers in the wake of this senseless attack. We've spoken with the driver to check on his well-being, and we're prepared to support law enforcement however we can as their investigation continues."
The driver is now urging Uber to increase its safety protocols.
"I want them to add cameras to the cars," he said. "If the cars had cameras, then we can at least see who did this."
No one is in custody, and Area One detectives are investigating the motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting.
