The circumstances surrounding the shooting were not immediately clear.
Police said a 52-year-old man, a 17-year old and a 16-year-old were all wounded. While initially police said a child was also shot, CPD amended their account to clarify that a 4-year-old suffered abrasions to the body after the child was thrown to the ground to be shielded from the shooting, police said.
No further details about the victims, including their genders and if they knew or had any relation to each other, were immediately known. A relative ABC7 spoke to near the scene of the shooting said the child was with their grandparent at the time of the shooting.
That relative said the 52-year-old is a well-known community leader.
"It was a drive-by shooting, my relative he was standing outside with his grandson and the individual or individuals pulled up and started shooting," said the relative, who asked not to be identified. "He protected his grandson. He grabbed his grandson to shield him so he won't get hurt and he ended up getting shot."
All three victims were taken to Stroger hospital in good condition.
Police said the suspects were in a car at the time of the shooting. They fled the scene but crashed the vehicle about a block and a half away, police said.
