9 dead after crash involving tanker truck, van shuts down part of Wisconsin highway, sheriff says

CLARK COUNTY, Wis. (WLS) -- Police were on the scene of a deadly crash that killed nine people Friday. It shut down a section of Highway 95 in rural Wisconsin.



The crash happened at Highway 95 and Highway J in the Township of Dewhurst, the Clark County Sheriff's Office said. That's near Black River Falls Rustic landing and Levis Mound Trail Center.

Preliminary information indicates that a semi was traveling eastbound on Highway 95, approaching the Highway J intersection, the sheriff's office said. At the same time, a van was heading northbound on Highway J. The vehicles then collided in the intersection.

Nine people were inside of the van, and eight of them were killed in the crash. The driver of the tanker truck was also killed in the crash, the county coroner said.

Highway 95 is closed at Highway J while sheriff's officers and Wisconsin State Patrol investigate the crash.

Police asked the public to avoid the area, and detours have been setup around the crash scene.

Emergency crews were still on the scene of the crash with officers at 3 p.m.
