Disney-ABC Television Group holds 'Day of Giving' to support Hurricane Harvey victims

ABC 7 Chicago joined forces with the American Red Cross to help support Hurricane Harvey relief efforts during ABC 7's Day Of Giving, Thursday, August 31, 2017 from 5 a.m. to 10:35 p.m.

Chicagoans donate to ABC7's Day of Giving


With Hurricane Harvey wreaking havoc on Houston, ABC 7 Chicago partnered with the American Red Cross of Chicago and Northern Illinois for ABC 7'S DAY OF GIVING, a commitment inviting Chicagoans to support recovery efforts for communities affected by the devastating storm, on Thursday, Aug. 31, from 5 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on ABC 7.

Live cut-ins during ABC 7 newscasts and throughout the broadcast day encouraged viewers to support the relief effort by donating online at redcross.org/abc, via their mobile phone by texting the word HARVEY to 90999 to make a $10 donation, or by calling 1-800-HELP-NOW (435-7669).

At the end of the in-studio telethon at 10:35 p.m. Thursday, more than $4.1 million had been donated to the Red Cross in Chicago.



"ABC 7 Chicago wanted to do something to help people in Houston and Southeast Texas who are enduring great hardship in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. This has become personal for ABC 7 because many colleagues and friends at our sister station, KTRK-TV, have been profoundly affected. We appreciate the generosity of all Chicagoans and the work of the American Red Cross," ABC 7 President and General Manager John Idler said.

"Hurricane Harvey is a storm, unlike anything to ever hit the state of Texas," said Celena Roldan, CEO of the Chicago and Northern IL Red Cross. "The relief effort will be substantial and lengthy, so the American Red Cross, is so grateful for the generosity and support of our partners at ABC 7. The generosity of ABC viewers enables the Red Cross to provide disaster relief to the people of Texas and Louisiana who are in desperate need."

The Walt Disney Company and KTRK-TV announced they committed $1 million cash to the American Red Cross in support of Hurricane Harvey recovery efforts.



DATG's 'Day of Giving' continued throughout the day across all Disney|ABC Television Group programs and platforms, all ESPN platforms, A&E, History, Lifetime, ABC Radio, Radio Disney, local stations and all network social platforms.

Disney Channel will present American Red Cross interstitial messages in which actor Cameron Boyce talks to kids about the basics of an emergency preparedness kit.

Disney's last "Day of Giving" in 2012 raised more than $18 million to aid local communities impacted by Hurricane Sandy.
