Disabled woman rescued from Greater Grand Crossing fire

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago firefighters rescued a disabled woman from a fire in a building in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood Monday night.

Firefighters responded to the blaze in the two story at the intersection of 71st Street and South Chicago Avenue at about 8:30 p.m.

The first floor of the building is home to a house of worship, and there are apartments on the second floor.

Firefighters said they had to pull a woman with disabilities from inside her apartment because she was unable to make it out on her own. Several other families were also displaced.

As of 10 p.m. the fire had still not been brought completely under control. Firefighters continued to work into the night to fully contain it.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. An investigation is ongoing.
