MARENGO, Ill. (WLS) -- A fundraiser was held Sunday to help a Marengo family who lost everything they owned when their neighbor's house exploded earlier this month.

Tim Keefer's family house was one of 18 homes destroyed June 11 in an early morning explosion in the 500-block of 7th Avenue.

"I'm feeling overwhelmed by the whole thing," said Keefer, varsity wrestling coach at Marengo Community High School.

He said saving his wife and kids was his main priority.

"When the explosion happened it took half the house, it was 10 minutes before the whole house burned down," Keefer said.

Thirty total houses were damaged in the McHenry County neighborhood, located about 60 miles northwest of Chicago. Two people were injured, but everyone survived.

On Saturday, the community came together in the wake of the destruction and heartbreak. The Marengo Community High School's wrestling team is helping the Keefers rebuild. All proceeds from tickets to participate in the tournament goes toward their new life.

"If we can get them a couple thousand that would be great," said Chad Miller, assistant wrestling coach.

Investigators are still trying to determine if a gas leak - or something else - triggered the explosion.
