I-57 multi-vehicle crash leaves 2 critically injured on South Side

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Two people were critically injured in an alcohol-related crash on I-57 on the South Side Wednesday morning, authorities said.

A two-vehicle crash occurred in the soutbound lanes of I-57 near 100th Street at about 2:20 a.m., Illinois State Police said. One of the people involved in that crash got out of their vehicle and was then struck by another vehiclle, police said.

The Chicago Fire Department said a 39-year-old woman was transported to a hospital in grave condition and a 48-year-old man was transported in critical condition.

Illinois State Police said the crash is alcohol-related.

Police has shut down a stretch of the expressway at Halsted Street for hours before reopening by at about 6:08 a.m.

Further details on the crash were not immediately available.
