Skokie police said seven protesters were cited for Criminal Trespass as a result of the sit-in. Police said they were called to Schakowsky's office when protesters arrived, and informed them that they would need to leave when the building closed at 5 p.m.
Police said at 5:30 p.m., officers ordered the protesters who were still there to disperse. Two more dispersal orders were given after that, with the last one at 5:42 p.m., police said. Seven people were still in the office and police said they were told they would be cited for criminal trespassing if they did not leave. They did not, so Skokie police said they were taken into custody, taken to the Skokie Police Department, and issued a second citation for Criminal Trespass.
No one was injured and all seven protesters have since been released. They are due in court on December 5.
Schakowsky's office released a statement confirming she spoke with the protesters by phone to discuss "the horrifying situation in Israel in Gaza."
"Last Friday, I led 55 of my colleagues in a letter to President Biden and Secretary Antony Blinken urging the US to ensure that innocent civilians in Gaza are protected from violence and attacks. That includes following international law, delivering food and water to Gaza, providing safe passage, humanitarian assistance, and ensuring the safe return of hostages. We must guarantee that all civilians, Palestinians, and Israelis are protected. I am doing everything in my power to end the violence as quickly as possible," the statement read in part. "We cannot achieve lasting peace and security for Israelis without addressing the humanitarian crises in Gaza and the West Bank and ending the occupation."
