CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago police shut down southbound Lake Shore Drive from Hollywood Avenue to Fullerton Avenue for nearly three hours early Wednesday morning for a murder investigation.

A man in his 20s was shot around 3:45 a.m., police said. He was heading south on Lake Shore in a Lexus when another car pulled up next to him near Fullerton. Police said someone inside that car shot him several times.

"Yeah that's really scary. It's a little unsettling," said Christine Lagemann, a runner.

"That's very scary, especially in Lincoln Park. We run along the lake path here multiple times a week. That's just really disappointing to hear," said Kendra Churchill, another runner.

The Lexus crashed into a median. The driver was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not been released. A source said he was a documented gang member.

A man and woman were riding in the Lexus. They were not hurt.

Officers spent hours along Lake Shore Drive, souring the pavement for shell casings. Southbound Lake Shore Drive re-opened around 6:30 a.m.

"It's a surprise because you don't usually hear about that here. I run along the lakefront path four or five times a week and it's usually just really quiet. To see this kind of activity is a little bit disappointing," said Michael Ko, another runner.

"I don't know. I guess, my safety. I'm not as concerned about it. I don't really go around thinking that I'm not safe," said Ricci Oppenlander, a Chicagoan.

Area North detectives are investigating. No one is in custody. Investigators have not released any information about the suspect's car.
