Metra train fatally hits woman in Washington Heights, authorities say

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A woman was killed after she was hit by a Metra Rock Island train heading inbound to the city Sunday evening on the South Side.

The crash happened near West 99th Street on South Vincennes Avenue, in Chicago's Washington Heights neighborhood, authorities said.



Investigators remained at the scene Sunday night, blocking the tracks to traffic.

A Metra spokesperson confirmed the woman was killed. Her age was not immediately known.

Remnants of a wheelchair could be seen on the train tracks. Police were also seen searching underneath the train and along the tracks near West 103rd Street and Vincennes, where the train stopped after hitting the woman.

The Chicago Fire Department responded to the scene, but they did not transport any victims to a hospital.

The Metra train involved was train #126, a spokesperson said. Trains were stopped at the Gresham station after the crash. No delays were initially caused due to the crash.

No further information about the circumstances of the crash were immediately known.
