Become self-aware during National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

Saturday, September 23, 2017
CHICAGO (WLS) -- September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Each year, more than 21,000 women are diagnosed with the deadly disease in the United States. Two-thirds of women diagnosed with ovarian cancer will die due to late-state diagnosis. But there are ways you can protect yourself: know your family history of ovarian cancer and know the ovarian cancer symptoms. Watch out for bloating, abdominal pain, trouble eating or feeling full quickly, and feeling the need to urinate urgently.

The non-profit organization Bright Pink has made it their mission to focus on early detection and prevention of ovarian cancer and breast cancer in young women. On September 27, 2017, Bright Pink will host its annual ChangeMakers benefit at Venue Six10 in Chicago. The event raises money to ensure young women get the treatment they need to defend against disease. Katie Thiede, the CEO of Bright Pink, sat down with Eyewitness News to talk about how you can help.
