Cell phone video captured neighbors rushing to the aid of both victims after they heard several gunshots.
"I only saw two kids and one was screaming really hard so I grabbed water," said Saleha Masood, a woman who helped the victims. "I couldn't do much. I didn't have any first aid other than just close the wound, help him out so the blood would stop coming out."
Both victims were shot in the leg. One boy was taken to Northwestern Community Hospital and the other was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, the Palatine Fire Department said.
The Palatine Police Department said schools in Districts 15 and 211 were on a soft lockdown during the afternoon due to the shooting.
