CHICAGO (WLS) -- A Chicago police officer shot an armed man during an investigation on Sunday afternoon, CPD said.

Police said that man, who is in his 20s, was previously arrested for something else, and, in this case, police pursued him after receiving a tip that he was in a stolen vehicle.

Just before 3 p.m., officers found a stolen Tesla in the 7400 block of South Hoyne Avenue, and the man inside tried to run away from police, CPD said.

Police chased the man to the 7300 block of South Hoyne Avenue, where an officer fired shots.

"At that time, the subject turned back toward the officer with a weapon in his hand, and the officer discharged his weapon, striking that offender in the leg," said Interim CPD Supt. Fred Waller.

CPD said the man, shot in the leg, was taken to Christ Hospital in good condition. One officer was transported to a local hospital for observation.

Police said the suspect did not fire at officers, but investigators found his firearm with an extended magazine on the scene.

A woman who lives near the scene did not want to be identified, but said she knows the man who was shot and saw him outside just moments before the shooting happened.

"I'm glad he's OK, because I happen to know him, and he's not a bad person. So, I'm actually very happy to hear he's OK," she said.

The shooting prompted a massive police response, and ABC7 saw at least 10 police vehicles show up there within an hour.

The woman who lives nearby added that a shooting like that is uncharacteristic for her neighborhood.

"It's very quiet. That's why I'm kind of shocked something happened in this area, especially on this block, because elderly people live down the street. Not too many young folks here," she said.

The officer involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days. Charges are pending against the suspect.

COPA investigators responded to the scene and asked anyone with information to call them at 312-746-3609.

Authorities did not immediately provide further information.
