Since 2022, Cook County has erased more than $1 billion in medical debt for more than 791,000 residents.
Eligible debt is automatically forgiven.

Those eligible will be notified by mail in branded Cook County government envelopes.
Those eligible must live in Cook County and reach a certain number of the federal poverty level. Alternately, medical debt would have to be at least 5% of annual income.
