CHICAGO (WLS) -- Investigations into a shooting and a deadly chain-reaction crash shut down part of the Eisenhower Expressway on Chicago's West Side overnight, Illinois State Police said on Sunday morning.

ISP said troopers responded to westbound Interstate 290 at California Avenue around 11:20 p.m. Saturday. That's near the city's Near West Side and Lawndale neighborhoods.

A person riding a motorcycle had been shot and crashed, ISP said. The motorcyclist was transported to a local hospital in an unknown condition.

While closures were in place for the investigation, troopers responded to westbound I-290 at Ashland Avenue, about 1 mile east of the shooting scene, around 3 a.m. Sunday.

ISP said traffic was slowed or stopped when a car rear-ended another vehicle, causing a chain-reaction crash. Video captured a large police presence there.

The crash involved four vehicles total, and eight people were hospitalized, ISP said. One of those injured was pronounced dead at local hospital.

The right lane and several ramps were shut down for several hours but reopened around 8 a.m.

Lanes that were closed in connection with the shooting investigation reopened around 5:30 a.m.

Authorities did not immediately provide further information.
