Man found dead in Chicago River on North Side identified by officials

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Officials have released the identity of the man who was found dead in the Chicago River on Saturday.



Police said officers responded to a marine distress call in the Budlong Woods neighborhood's 5200-block of North Virginia Avenue around 7:20 a.m.

The call was to the north branch of the Chicago River near River Park on the city's North Side, police said.

The Chicago Fire Department pulled the 52-year-old man's body from the water.



Ashraf Mahomed was identified as the victim by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

How the man died was not immediately clear.

Authorities did not immediately provide further information.
