Aurora police said someone called 911, saying a driver was following them near Jackson Street and East Benton Street and that the driver had a gun and claimed to be in law enforcement.
Officers responded just after 9:30 a.m. and found the vehicles at 4th Avenue and South State Street, near East Aurora High School. The driver referenced in the 911 call was standing outside of his vehicle, police said.
Police said during an encounter, an officer discharged their firearm once, striking the driver's vehicle. No one was hit, and no injuries have been reported.
Police said the driver, a 48-year-old man, was taken into custody. He has no affiliation with any law enforcement agency.
The officer who fired their weapon was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.
The Aurora Police Department's Investigations Division detectives and evidence technicians are investigating.
