Baby orangutan raised by surrogate at Brookfield Zoo

Staff say Kecil and his new mom Maggie are doing great and have been together since the baby's arrival a month ago.

BROOKFIELD, Ill. (WLS) -- A 6-month-old baby orangutan named Kecil is doing well at the Brookfield Zoo after he was brought there to be raised by a surrogate mother.

Kecil, a 6-month-old orangutan whose mother couldn't care for him at Toledo Zoo, has found a family at the Brookfield Zoo. Maggie, 53, was introduced to the baby as his surrogate mother.

Staff said Kecil and his new mom Maggie are doing great and have been together since the baby's arrival a month ago.

It will still be several months before the two will be on exhibit for visitors to see, so they can develop a bond and Kecil becomes more agile.
