Man charged in I-294 chase through suburbs, state's attorney says

BENSENVILLE, Ill. (WLS) -- A man has been charged for leading police on a pursuit on Wednesday morning.



Thomas Philip, 73 of Woodridge was charged with four counts of aggravated fleeing a police officer, the DuPage County State's Attorney said.

Philip was allegedly driving without a valid driver's license and his vehicle did not have insurance.

Officials said Bensenville police tried to pull over Philip for an expired registration on a gold Lexus in the 400-block of West Irving Park Road.



However, the suspect allegedly sped away and "drove into oncoming traffic on multiple occasions."

About an hour later, the driver was found in a Jewel-Osco parking lot located at 1127 S. York Road, police said.

Police tried to take him into custody. However, the driver allegedly "bumped" into a squad car and initiated the pursuit.

Police said Philip drove north on York Road and ignored multiple red lights before entering Interstate 90 and ultimately making his way to northbound Interstate 294.



Chopper 7 was over the police chase on I-294 at about 11:30 a.m.

At one point, the driver was seen smoking a cigarette.



The chase came to a stop after police used two stop strips on the vehicle near mile marker 13, not far from the Wisconsin state line.



Video from Chopper 7 showed the driver being taken into police custody at about noon.

Philip's next court appearance is scheduled for April 13. He was ordered to remain detained until then.
