CHICAGO (WLS) -- Summer is a popular time to move, and the Better Business Bureau warns scammers are using AI to make fake moving companies look more convincing than ever.

Some create professional-looking websites and fake five-star reviews.

Consumers report paying deposits only to have movers never show up, while others say their belongings were held hostage until they paid more money.

To avoid moving scams:

Get three written estimates based on an in-home visit.

Be wary of movers offering only phone estimates or prices that seem too good to be true.

Make sure a mover has a physical address, check their license and complaint history through the Illinois Commerce Commission for in-state moves.

Check the U.S. Department of Transportation for interstate moves.

You can also place a tracking device in a few boxes so you can keep tabs on your belongings.
