Boil order in effect after water main break in Robbins

ROBBINS, Ill. (WLS) -- A 24-hour boil order is in effect after a water main broke in Robbins Thursday afternoon. Crews are still on the scene working on repairing the main, but water is once again flowing to residents.

Village officials say the problems started around midday when a private contractor drilling a hole for a street light ruptured a 12 inch main at the corner of 135th and Kedzie, right across the street from the Robbins water tower. There has been no street flooding, but all 5,000 or so Robbins residents were without water for about nine or ten hours.

"I haven't been able to wash dishes, I haven't been able to cook," said LaVerne Sullivan. "I haven't been able to do laundry. I haven't been able to use the toilet. I cannot flush it."

"The issue is getting to the break," said Robbins mayor Tyrone Ward. "There was concrete that was encasing the actual 12-inch line. That's what took the longest time."

The village did hand out bottled water at the Robbins fire station Thursday night.
