Brookfield Zoo Chicago reaches agreement with workers on strike

BROOKFIELD, Ill. (WLS) -- The Brookfield Zoo Chicago has reached a tentative agreement to end a three-day strike by members of the Teamsters Union, the zoo announced Wednesday.

The zoo said it as agreed with Teamsters Local 727 on a four-year collective bargaining agreement, for the more than 200 union-represented employees in the Zoo's grounds, custodial, and facilities teams.

"Today is an important and positive moment for Brookfield Zoo Chicago, and we are excited to welcome our team members back as we move forward together in our shared dedication to our people, the animals in our care, and the communities we serve," said Dr. Mike Adkesson, President and CEO of Brookfield Zoo Chicago. "This Zoo has always been powered by people who care deeply about one another and our mission, and this agreement reflects a commitment to continuing to provide exceptional care and educational experiences for our guests while supporting the long-term health and sustainability of the Zoo."

"While it is unfortunate that it took a ULP strike and injunction to get the Zoo to see reason, today's tentative agreement is a major win for the members," John Coli Jr., secretary treasurer of Teamsters Local 727, said. "The terms provide additional staffing, wage increases totaling 20% over the life of the contract, continuation of the 100%employer paid inion healthcare and more."

The zoo said the agreement includes a 20 percent pay increase over the course of the contract. The zoo said is also includes enhancements to staffing for the Zoo's animal care and facilities teams



The zoo said union members will return to work once the agreement is approved and finalized.
