The incident occurred on DuSable Lake Shore Drive near 47th Street.
The driver of the car somehow flipped off the road, came across the grass and landed on top of an electrical shed, just missing the bike path by a few feet.
This has led to bike riders demanding a guardrail be put in place for more protection from cars.
"It's scary, because you know, I think about it, and I wouldn't have time to react," rider Bruce Tyler said.
Tyler said he rides this path often and it's not the first time he's seen something like this happen.
"They say lightning doesn't strike twice in the same place, but irresponsible drivers apparently do, because it happened twice down there and twice right here, right behind where we're standing," Tyler said.
Chicago police said a 23-year-old driving a gray SUV swerved to avoid a car while heading north on DuSable Lake Shore Drive near 47th Street.
He landed on top of this tree and electrical shed. ABC7 has been told the driver was able to crawl out of the car and refused medical attention. No one else was hurt.
"He's clearly very blessed, yeah, to be able to do that, because just looking at it, you really can't even tell, like, is that a car," rider Sharon Sneed said.
Still it's left those who often use the trail concerned for their future safety if more protection isn't put in place.
"I feel like it's gotten more and more unsafe to just ride a bike around here, even if there's a bike lane," rider Tyler Boyle Hoban said.
Police said no citations were issued in this accident.
