Northwest Indiana has been dealing with power outages since last Thursday's severe storms ravaged the area.
As of Tuesday morning, more than 3,700 NIPSCO customers were without power.
Portage Fire Chief Chris Crail said two people died after a portable generator filled their home with carbon monoxide.
The chief added that in another incident, six people were transported to a hospital.
"Our prayers are with the families and friends of those who have been lost to these issues," Mayor Austin Bonta said
Chief Crail urged the public to safely use generators, and keep them at a safe distance from their homes.
