On Tuesday evening, town officials are expected to address those concerns while laying forth their plans to keep up with the continued growth.
"For sale." "Tour this home now." There is new construction all around Cedar Lake, Indiana these days as hundreds of new homes have been added in recent years.
"It's lovely to see the development. It's just that there are some questions now," said Cedar Lake Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Diane Jostes.
Those questions are primarily regarding infrastructure and the town's ability to keep up with the population growth. According to some estimates, Cedar Lake's population has jumped by around 20% since the 2020 U.S. Census.
"We have had a surge in people from Illinois that have moved to the area," said Cedar Lake Town Manager Benjamin Eldridge.
Town officials will host a special council meeting meant to address Cedar Lake's water supply on Tuesday night. A sudden spike two years ago raised concerns that trouble might be looming on the horizon. Two separate engineering firms have since been hired to look at the existing water system.
"We don't have a water problem. We don't have a water production problem," Eldridge said. "But if we want to continue growing in the future, we have to plan ahead for that, and that includes additional wells and additional storage tanks, and that's where we're at now."
Jostes said she is looking forward to hearing what the plan is to keep Cedar Lake moving forward.
"Streets are busier. Stores are busier. Sewers are used more. Water is used more. It's all part of change," Jostes said. "I hope this meeting will give everybody the opportunity to ask questions. And then, maybe there'll be some peace of mind. At least we'll know what's happening."
Tuesday's council meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m.
