Chicago City Council committee to take up measures on teen takeovers

Thursday, April 9, 2026
CHICAGO (WLS) -- Teen curfews and so-called teen takeovers will be up for discussion at Chicago City Hall Thursday.

This as some aldermen have been pushing for some type of action for months.

With summer coming up, there is growing pressure to put a stop to teen takeovers.

The city's Committee on Public Safety Committee will meet Thursday. They will discuss different measures to curb large teen gatherings.

A 16-year-old was charged in take over in Hyde Park, last week. That night, teens could be seen jumping on top of cars.

At a teen take over in the Loop two weeks ago, eight teens were charged and police issued 24 curfew violations.

One measure on the agenda is regarding the declaration of disruptive youth gatherings and snap curfews, the other is about social media cooperation for public safety.

Two other measures will likely go for a vote. That includes increasing penalties for offenses that take place in parks and playgrounds plus expanding the definition of trespassing and establishing cumulative fines of $250 to $1000.

Mayor Brandon Johnson did share a video last weekend encouraging parents to hold their children accountable and find safe alternatives to teen trends.

The mayor has pushed back against calls to change the city's curfew.

Thursday's committee meeting starts at 10:15 a.m.
