The shooting happened on Tuesday around 11:01 p.m. in the 800-block of Garfield Boulevard in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.
Two 19-year-old women were in a Chevy Malibu when a silver SUV approached and started to shoot at them.
The driver of the Malibu, was shot in the upper back, causing her to lose control, and crash into a Volkswagen Jetta in the 5400-block of Halsted Street.
She was rushed to the hospital in critical condition where she later died.
The driver was identified as 19-year-old Cyra C. Magby, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner.
Magby's aunt, Rasheta Smith, said she is devastated and bewildered by her niece's death.
"She was 19. She didn't experience. She had no children. She haven't did that much traveling. You know, she had things. She had life," she said. "Never was involved in the wrong things, so I don't understand, you know, how this could happen. We're all in shock."
Magby was a recent graduate of Englewood Stem High School, where she played on the basketball team.
Friends of Magby can't make sense of the news. Nashanti Thompson said she grew up with Magby after meeting in elementary school.
"I'm just... I'm really hurt... like I'm sad. I'm going to miss Cyra," Thompson said. "She was a sweet person. Very smart, always outgoing. She loved to play ball, she loved to dance. She just loved to make other people happy. Like if she seemed that you were happy, she was happy."
The passenger of the Malibu had face lacerations and was taken to the hospital in serious but stable condition.
A man, 43, was driving the Jetta with a 40-year-old woman as the passenger. Both had minor injuries from the crash and were both taken to the hospital in good condition.
No other injuries were reported.
"Cyra didn't deserve that," Thompson said. "She didn't deserve to just be, you know, killed because of some foolishness that they have going on. She didn't deserve that."
Relatives said Magby had just started a new security job earlier that day and may have been heading home after celebrating with friends.
"She had all good things going for herself. You know, she was working, helping her autistic brother, helping her mother, loving on her siblings," Smith said. "She was doing all the right things. That's why this is so devastating."
"Her friends are hurt, heartbroken," Thompson said. "Her family is heartbroken, hurt. Just do the right thing and turn yourself in."
The silver SUV, which police said shot the driver, fled northbound from the scene.
Employee at a liquor store near the scene of the crash said police were reviewing surveillance footage there.
No one is in custody at this time. CPD Area One detectives are conducting a homicide investigation.
