Her 41-year-old daughter, Angel, was sleeping in another room of their second-floor apartment when Sharon went to check on her.
"It was just a lot of shots, from a different type of gun. You could hear the difference, how fast it was going. The next one sounds like a machine gun," Young said.
Once police arrived, they found some 30 bullet casings in the street. They continued to investigate on Tuesday afternoon, collecting more evidence.
Young says her family occupies the East Garfield Park building near Christiana and Gladys, and everyone knows her daughter.
"She's a high-spirited person. She's loved by everyone, everyone," Young said.
Neighbor Trina Hunt, who is pregnant, says she heard the shots and headed for cover immediately.
"I instantly dropped to the floor and rolled as close to under my couch as I could. My son, my nephew managed to grab him and yank him to the floor, and they crawled into the closet," Hunt said.
Hunt and her family were uninjured.
But two of the bullets entered the second floor near the bedroom window where Angel was sleeping. One bullet struck her in the head near her eye socket. She was seriously injured, but alive.
"God was so good to us. The bullet instead of going straight to her brain and killing her, it turned and went down into her back," Young said.
No one is in custody and Area Four detectives are investigating.
